Magesh’s Music Story
Magesh is originally from Australia and started playing drums at the age of 13 at school (over 30 years ago!). In fact he started by playing bass guitar in the school band and accidentally fell into drumming when he volunteered to stand in for the drummer one day even though he’d never played the drums before. In Magesh’s words “I think the drummer before me was terrible which made me look decent”! At the age of 14 he was inspired by the famous Australian drummer, Virgil Donati when his brother booked tickets to see him play. After a virtuoso drum solo, the crowd of 2000 people gave him a standing ovation, and Magesh knew instantly that “This is what I want to do”.
From there he took the initiative to book private drum lessons outside of school with a famous Australian drummer which he continued on for 10 years. Magesh then moved to America to study with famous drummers who had performed with Michael Jackson, Prince and Miles Davis. He learnt a huge amount from drummers such as Will Calhoun, Jonathan ‘Sugarfoot’ Moffet and John Blackwell who taught him a great deal about drumming and the music business. Whilst at music college he was lucky enough to gig with the teachers there and as a result his reputation grew quickly.
Magesh’s career as a drummer snowballed quickly from playing bar gigs and weddings, to corporate events, TV and playing with world famous rock stars in packed stadiums all within a matter of years. By this stage he was truly dedicated to his art and practiced up to 8 hours per day. His specialism was being a groove drummer and as he was also a very reliable and friendly, approachable character, he earned himself gigs with stars such as Lionel Richie, Ricky Martin, Rhianna and Nelly Fertado.
